Work in progress: behind the hair

Yesterday I worked on the background. I decided to put in the suggestion of a stormy sky. I stippled it on with a stencil brush so it would be uneven and cloudy. Today is a day for critical examination and color corrections. I suppose I better start thinking how I’ll quilt it, too.

Work in progress: beyond the hair

I took a deep breath and started painting the face and hand yesterday. I’m happy with it for the most part. Mostly, I’m glad that part is over! It’s always a bit stress-inducing πŸ™‚ I took a picture of the work in progress and opened the file in Photoshop Elements. This allowed me to audition…

The last few days, this bird has been scolding us anytime we stepped out our back door, and even when he/she could see us through the dining room window. The poor thing was in a tizzy when DH mowed the lawn! We don’t have any big trees in our backyard, just a few tiny peach…

Work in progress: painting hair again

I spent yesterday making a fresh start. I decided to get a fresh piece of fabric and paint the hair again. I started by going to my supply cabinets. I pulled out each of the paints and inks that I was willing to consider and I painted a sample. There were several important characteristics I…

    Work in progress: painting hair

I started working on a new quilt. I was playing with the design last week, combining several photos of a dear friend who kindly agreed to pose for me. In my mind, I wanted to do a very loose, colorful, watercolor-like painting. I wanted to use my favorite Tsukineko All-Purpose inks, but in a different…

Today I had my second watercolor class. It is held at a local community center, and Nita Leland is the instructor. I did some more simple overlays and some washes. I explored different strokes that can be made with a single brush. I was laughing at myself in class today. I can’t say watercolor painting…

I’ve had a long-standing love affair with color. One of the things I like to talk about when I do color lectures or color workshops is how color is a cameleon. It changes based on the things surrounding it. Robin Ferrier pointed me to two really cool illustrations of this. The first one to check…

Last night I had great fun teaching the Warren County Quilt Guild of Maineville, Ohio about color in quiltmaking. I love color! I think color is what draws many of us to quiltmaking. It certainly lures me into the fabric stores! This lovely quilt guild gave me the opportunity to talk about various color schemes…

Today was my first watercolor class with Nita Leland. She’s written some terrific books on color, which I’ve enjoyed for several years, and I highly recommend them. I knew she lived near me, so I started investigating and found out she was teaching an 8-week class at a nearby community center, and I squeezed in…
