Windblown

Introducing “Windblown.” I just finished the binding! Time for a little break and a mini celebration If you’ve been following the progress day by day, thank you for your interest, your comments and encouragement! If you’re seeing this for the first time and if you’re interested, you can see the work in progress by reading the posts in the Windblown category, beginning with the May 17 post. Now I need to pin it up nice and straight, put it in good lighting, and get some really good pictures. Then I’ll be able to show you some good [ ... ]

Work in progress: feathers in her hair

I squeezed in a couple hours of quilting last night, and then started again bright and early this morning. I’ve started quilting her hair. I wanted to make a connection between her hair and the gusts of wind, so I’ve been quilting feathers and strings of pearls in some of the strands. I’ve finished all of the hair on the right side. My goal for today is to finish the rest of her hair. An ambitious goal! I think I’ve got a title for the quilt, too. Unless I come up with a better title, I’m considering [ ... ]

Work in progress: background wind gusts

All my spare hours are being spent quilting the background. I wanted a something that suggested wind blowing. I confess I love feathers, though, so I decided to try to combine the two. I’m also working in parts of a quilt block called “Windblown Star.” (I love Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia Of Pieced Quilt Patterns.) I still have a long way to go!

Work in progress: skin tones finished

I finished the face at about 11:45 last night. Had a good night’s sleep and am ready to tackle the background. I’m sure that will involve lots of problem solving! The hair will be done last. I also need to think of a good title.

Work in progress: quilting

The quilting has begun. I started on the easiest thing first: the green sweater. I decided to use three values of green to quilt it. I’m quilting it very close together because I want it to contrast with the areas of trapunto. I haven’t done that before, so we’ll see how that works out! After the sweater and shirt were quilted, I started in on the skin tones. I began with the arm and hand. Just a bunch of “simple” cylinder shapes, right? Again, I used three values of beige to enhance the three dimensionality. Now, on to the [ ... ]

Work in progress: pin basting

No more procrastinating! I just finished pin basting my current work in progress. Today I start quilting! I tried something new (to me) this time. I want some areas of trapunto, and I wanted to do it as easy as possible, so I am using two battings. I’m using Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton Blend on the bottom and Heirloom Washable Wool on top. (From left to right, the picture shows my quilt top, the wool batting, the cotton/poly batting, and the backing.) I know wool will compress under close stitching and puff up when stitched [ ... ]

Published: In Stitches eMag

The third volume of Quilting Arts In Stitches emagazine just came out. This is a digital magazine that is available for PCs or Macs. This issue is packed with some really big names! People I’d like to take classes from. People like Gwen Hedley, Leni Levenson Wiener, Lisa Call, Judy Perez, Natalya Aikens, Barbara Barrick McKie, Terry Grant, Lisa Shepard Stewart, and Candy Glendening. I’m torn! I want to read every article right away, but I’m on a deadline [ ... ]

Work in progress: quilting motifs

I spent the weekend adding some Shiva Paintstiks to my painting. I added color and texture in the hair, and also added the suggestion of a traditional quilt block called “Windblown Star” in the sky. Now for the fun part: planning out how I might quilt this piece. I don’t usually do too much advance planning. The most I might do is to lay a piece of transparent plastic over the top and draw some general directional lines with a dry erase marker. This time I wanted to do something a little different. I used tracing paper [ ... ]
