Product review: Pentel Gel Roller for Fabric

It can be tough traveling, but sometimes the biggest challenge is returning home to the piles of mail and catching up on emails, not to mention reading blogs! I actually like to decompress with a cup of coffee and surround myself with the piles and savor it while sweet DH does the laundry.

This time, nestled in our stack of mail were copies of the latest Quilting Arts magazine. Inside is my first column reviewing products that are of interest to art quilters. The column is called “Out of the Toolbox” and I’ll be doing a total of six columns over the next year. In this issue, the review is on page 74. I reviewed Pentel’s Gel Roller for Fabric, which is my new best friend!

Synopsis of the article: Pentel’s Gel Roller for Fabric performed beautifully in every respect. It delivered a dark, smooth line with no smearing, no hiccups. Both the heat-set and non-heat set samples washed well with no signs of fading after going through the washer with regular laundry three times. Basically, it is everything you could want in a great fabric pen.

To celebrate my new column, I have TWO issues of this magazine to give away, so you have TWO chances to win. No hoops to jump through. Just leave a comment below. I’d especially love to hear any suggestions on products you would like to see reviewed. On Friday morning I’ll draw numbers to select the two winners.

Looks like you’ve been doing some homework to take the gel pens and see what they can do. I’d love to get the copy of the magazine so I could read it myself!

  3. Thanks so much for the chance and congrats on the column! I would love to see a review of different pens/pencils/markers/paints that can be used to shade in trapunto-type stitching. Thanks again!

    1. I like that suggestion ๐Ÿ™‚

Congratulations on the column! I know people will love it. Have you tried the new Frixion pens by pilot? You’re supposed to be able to erase the marks with an iron, but I’ve heard the marks can come back if the fabric gets cold. I’ll bet people would appreciate your take on them.

  5. Best wishes on the new column!
I enjoy your work and will look forward to reading it.

  6. I would love a copy of the magazine and have been wondering about the pens!

  7. Ooh, I’d love to win a copy. Thanks for the giveaway! Hmm, new products to review? The new Frixion pens?

  8. I think there are some new acrylic rulers out that sharpen the rotary cutter blade as use it. I would like to see those tested to see how well they work.

    1. I just saw those on a blog somewhere. Very cool!

  9. Maria,
I am a big fan of your work. Heard that this issue of QA was excellent. Products to review? What about foiling materials? Thanks for the opportunity to WIN!

  10. Maria, Congrats on your 1st article in Quilting Arts, and a big THANKS for starting the bruhaha on the Quilt Art list. It was the best thing to happen on the list in a couple of years. It has recharged and renewed the list!!!

  11. Thanks for the chance, Maria.

If possible when you review products for art quilting please include any info. on light fastness. Thanks. CP

    1. Great reminder! I usually check for washfastness, but haven’t considered lightfastness. That, of course, will require more advance planning ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. I have used gel pens a lot, particularly those with metal shine, when I do machine piecing to mark points for matching. The shine is easily seen, regardless of fabric color or the marker color. However, I find it troublesom when shop stop offering products still in production to make room for the latest fab. So I hold on to my two last metal gel pens and hope they will last me for a very long time.

  14. Don’t include me in the contest I just wanted to let you know that I love these pens and your article! I’ve been touting the virtues of the Pental Gel Fabric pen to my quilt guild for the past year. I love how smoothly they write on the fabric. I’m looking forward to seeing what else you come up with in your column!
