Product review: deColourant

The December 2011/January 2012 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine came out. It has my product review of deColourant and deColourant Plus. The article summarizes the discoveries made during my play day with Lisa Quintana, Susan Pickrell, and Debra Bentley. In short, deColourant is a fun product to play with, but it requires some experimentation to get good results. I could see how some textile artists would love using it, especially because it does not change the feel of the fabric at all, but it is messy and a little fussy. For the way I [ ... ]

Columbus Modern Quilt Guild

Last night I had the great pleasure of sharing my quilts with the Columbus Modern Quilt Guild. In fact, I was having so much fun, I completely forgot to take pictures! They’ve only been meeting for a year now, so they are a small group and I was their first speaker, and it was a real honor. I spent a lot of time talking about how I work on overcoming my fear of failure through experimenting. In some ways, I see experimentation and a sense of adventure as a core characteristic of the [ ... ]

I can see my floor!

Yes! For weeks, I desperately needed to clean my studio, and now I can really see the floor! It was so horrifying, I couldn’t bring myself to take “before” pictures. Seriously. I haven’t been in there to work since September. Do you remember October and November? All the traveling? All the teaching? All the shopping? For two months I’ve been stacking stuff in there: on the floor, on the worktable, on the chair, hanging from the doors, leaning against every surface. My suitcase full of goodies from Houston still sat smack dab in the middle of my main work area. [ ... ]

Sweet hubby joins in the fun

Guess who else has joined in on the fun? Sweet hubby! He comes with me to my workshops, so he’s heard me teach it enough times. Now he’s giving it a try too! I’m really excited because I always tell people that anyone can do the “Making Faces” technique. You don’t need to be a quilter. You don’t need to be an artist. You just need to be able to cut with a pair of scissors. Shhh!!! I can’t show you a picture of his finished portrait because it will be a Christmas present. And, he plans on making more… [ ... ]

First portrait for DD#2

DD#2 came over Sunday evening to work on one of the portraits she’s making for a friend. This is the first portrait she’s made, and she has two more planned. It’s fun that my family wants to try these, too. I’ve told people that anyone can make them, not just quilters. I was interested in seeing how DD#2 would do since she has dyslexia. I imagined there might be some issues with flipping things due to working in mirror image. I wanted to learn from her so I would be able to help other people better as well. When DD#2 [ ... ]

Tutorial: Photographing quilts

I am not a professional photographer, but I am convinced that just about anyone can take decent pictures of their own quilts; certainly good enough for documenting your quilts. In most cases, you can take pictures good enough to enter quilt competitions. Personally, I’ve actually only hired a local professional photographer once, and I was disappointed with his results. That said, I have sent a couple of my quilts to quilt magazines for publication and their photographer did an absolutely fabulous job, one I would never be able to reproduce. So, there [ ... ]

Life happens

Last week was one of those “life happens” week. It would be untrue to say that I quilt full-time. No, there are many other responsibilities that crowd in and take precedence. Those things may very well be enjoyable to me, and I certainly wouldn’t want to eliminate them, but they still keep me out of the studio. I spent a couple of days with a photo shoot. It was time to get some decent pictures of some of my quilts. Even though I continually encourage people to document their quilts, there were a few that I had not [ ... ]

Purple, pink and blue Friday

We had a great Thanksgiving with wonderful, out-of-town friends. Thankfully, no Black Friday madness for us! None of us relish the thought of being crushed by crowds. Instead, the men did male-bonding stuff and went to the Air Force Museum, while we stayed behind in peace and quiet and I taught them how to make fabric portraits. I let Brynn, Susan, and DD#1 rummage through my fabric stash to find colors they liked, and the fun began! Brynn and Susan both picked photos of little girls they sponsor through Compassion International. DD#1 picked one of herself [ ... ]
