February Free Motion Quilting Challenge

Free-Motion Quilting ChallengeI’m taking part in SewCalGal’s 2012 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge this year. Diane Gaudynski was the guest teacher for February. She’s one of my favorites! Her quilts are drop-jaw gorgeous!!! So today I spent some time playing with feathers.

feather practice

I decided to use a fat quarter of Kona cotton, which I divided into three panels so I could experiment with three different feathers.

For the first two feathers, I used 60 wt Bottom Line thread. For the last one, I changed to 40 wt Highlights. It was fun trying to think of variations on the basic feather. I was getting rushed toward the end, but I wanted to finish today, so the quilting lines became more careless toward the end. Ah, well.

Earlier today, I worked more on my resist samples.

Resist experimentFor this one, I applied the resit with stenciling, stamping, and hand painting with various tools. The yellow and rust colored areas are where I mixed ink into the resist, just to see what happens. I hope to have time to paint it tomorrow so I can write my article and have one more thing to cross off my to-do list.
