This is the third month of SewCalGal’s 2012 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge. Wow! This month nearly got away from me. Wonder how that happened? Anyway, after dinner tonight, I pulled out a fat quarter of pink Kona cotton, some batting scraps and some muslin. I quickly prepared a quilt sandwich, and away I went. This time I ran the machine faster than I normally would. It was fun, although maybe not as neat as I typically like.

Here’s the tutorial I promised last week. In an effort to make DD#2′s pregnancy easier I wanted to make her a “belly blanket.” This is a small, very soft, circular blanket that is intended to gently soothe a pregnant tummy while the skin is continually being stretched, and to help mamma relax during delivery. Afterwards, the newborn can be wrapped in it, and it will already have mamma’s scent on it.
DD#2 and I chose to use some special, hand painted, silk satin on one side and a textured Minky Cuddle Dimple Dot fabric. If you are making one, you [ ... ]

This weekend I started making DD#2s comfy pregnant belly blanket. I want to make this extra special, so I hand painted a piece of silk satin. I used Jacquard Clear Water Based Resist, which I transferred to a tiny bottle with an itty bitty metal tip, and hand lettered verses from Psalm 92. Then I added some swirls and rubber stamped some dots. After letting it dry overnight, I was ready to hand paint it.
I wanted the fabric to stay as soft as possible, so instead of using fabric paint, I pulled out some green [ ... ]

The last three weeks have been rather surreal for our family. First, we rejoiced with DD#1 when she got engaged. Four days later we rallied around my husband when he experienced his stroke, and we continue to help him as he works toward recovery. Five days after the stroke, before DH was even out of the hospital, we mourned with DD#2 when she found out their precious, unborn baby has acrania and, as a family, we’ve chosen to celebrate the time we do have with him or her. Last year I wrote a short article for Quilting Arts magazine called “Quick and Easy Silhouette Quilts.” Today, it will be republished in a new free eBook from Interweave on Quilting for Beginners. You can get your free download from Quilting Daily.

Here’s a short and sweet post. I have two April/May 2012 issues of Quilting Arts magazine to give away. This is the issue that has my product review of Lapel Stick, a fabric glue stick that I used to make an entire quilt without using fusibles or even straight pins. I got my April/May 2012 Quilting Arts Magazine in the mail yesterday, and quickly flipped through it to find my “Quilt Queen.” Rather self-centered, I know! But, I confess, it is always fun to see something you’ve done in print. Now that I’ve seen for myself that it’s really there, I can take my time to read the rest of the magazine. There are always such terrific articles and such amazing artists! And this particular issue focuses on one of my favorite topics: color.

I’m happy to say I made my goal! I finished quilting and binding my batik resist sample on Saturday, and nearly wrote my whole article, too. I was called away for very worthwhile reasons (honest!), and so I finished up the article this morning. Of course, my sample is not “Art” with a capital “A”, and it’s not something I would ever enter into a show, but I learned so much in the process and I hope my article will be helpful to others, too, once it comes out, of course. Now everything is photographed, packaged, labeled, and [ ... ]
