There’s been a new wrinkle, maybe a new fold, in the patchwork of my life. On Wednesday, my sweet hubby had a stroke. He was at a neighbor’s house when, for a minute or two, he lost complete use of his right arm and right leg, and then it went away and he felt fine. It happened again a couple of times over the next hour, but each time it went away and he felt fine. He came home when he had another episode. Still he hesitated, but after talking a bit, he let me load him up in the van and drive him to the nearby hospital. It’s so close that it would have taken longer to call an ambulance, and as before, he was feeling pretty normal and even walked out to the car himself.
By the time I got to be with him in the hospital room, he again was unable to move his right arm and right leg. They gave him a clot-busting drug and later, they also performed a CT angio to make sure there were no blockages. The specialist was pleased to report that he couldn’t find any blockages.
All day Thursday we waited with him while a series of doctors and specialists cared for him. He still couldn’t move his right arm and right leg when I left Thursday night. Friday morning I came in and offered to help him clean up, and he had full use of both is right arm and right leg! He was even able to brush his own teeth. I was amazed.
We are also thankful that his speech and cognitive abilities don’t seem to have been affected either which, needless to say, is pretty important for a full time pastor. Friday he started having severe headaches and his vision was blurry, which wasn’t the case the day before. We’ll just have to wait and see how things progress.
Thankfully, I believe he has had excellent care the entire time. I’m sure everyone will understand that over the coming weeks and months, I expect I will be spending the majority of my time focusing on my sweet hubby and my daughters, and very little time on my quilting. Only God knows what the future holds for us, but we are comforted and secure because we know Who holds our future. God is so good, and we have felt at peace throughout this entire process. At no point have I felt panicked or overwhelmed. We have each other, and we have a wonderful church family that has gathered around us, for which we are also very thankful.
In any case, as I blog, I hope you don’t mind that there will likely be less about quilting and more about my family, the upcoming wedding, and the coming grandbaby. I’m just warning you now 🙂

I, too, am glad your husband is doing so well. These things are so much easier to handle when we are not taking the journey alone, but have God with us every step of the way.
Of course you need to change your priorities right now. You have a lot going on in your family and that is where you focus must be right now.

“They” say it is so important to get medical attention when things like that happen. So, you did the right thing by getting him to the hospital. Let’s hope this was just an incident that won’t cause any more problems. I personally think that when one feels at peace with what is going on, that it’s a good sign that things will improve. I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and prayers also.
That is so scary!! I’m sorry you two are going through this. My hubby had a similar stroke exactly one year ago, and it throws you for a loop! Hopefully yours will clear up entirely and leave no traces of difficulties in a few weeks/months, like it did for Scott. It left a permanent mark on us, though. I’m far more observant of how he eats, and we don’t scuba dive anymore. I’m way too leery of the pressure changes setting off another mini-stroke. I’m so sorry to read about the troubles you have been having. You have amazing faith. As you know there is a time and a season for everything and now is the time to take care of family. I hope the doctors will be led to do the right tests and find exactly what is causing this problem.
I would offer one bit of advice though – please ask the doctors to check his heart for a PFO. They should know what you mean when you ask. I only know about these because I have one and had several small strokes but none since my heart was repaired. Best wishes to you and your family!
