Winners from the 2012 MVQG show

The Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild met last night, and they announced the winners from last weekend’s show. Our guild doesn’t use a panel of judges to pick the winners. Instead, each person that comes to the show is given a ballot as they enter, and they get to vote on their favorite quilt in each category. I always enjoy learning what quilts the average viewer picks since they are a mix of quilters and non-quilters. It is often very different from what trained judges might pick, but each group is looking for something different, [ ... ]

IQA Journal Winter 2012

I just got my IQA (International Quilt Association) Digital Journal for Winter 2013. It has the award winning quilts from the 2011 IQA Judged Show in it. All I have to say is, seriously? When “Windblown” won the big award at the Houston quilt festival, they told me I would have to say a few words at the awards banquet. Not my favorite thing to do, and I didn’t do it well, either, but no one told me that they were going to print my acceptance “speech” (if [ ... ]

Beavercreek News-Current

The Beavercreek News-Current, a small local newspaper in our town, did a nice article on “Windblown” winning the award at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. (Thanks, Jodi!) I knew they were writing an article, but didn’t know when it was going to be published until a friend at church said one of her relatives saw it. Isn’t it fun how the grapevine works? You can see the full article on line at xeniagazette.com.

Windblown on The Quilt Show

Sharon Pederson of The Quilt Show interviewed me about Windblown while I was at the International Quilt Festifal in Houston. The interview is now on her Daily Blog. If the link above doesn’t work, you can visit the website at http://www.thequiltshow.com/os/blog.php/blog_id/4378.

What was I going to say?

Someone asked me what I was going to say at the IQA Luncheon last Wednesday, if I didn’t have a melt down like I did. Yes, I really did have something in mind, but I accidentally left my brain behind when I walked to the podium. Plus, my eyes have a habit of leaking when I’m feeling stress. I guess all that pressure just squeezes the water right out of my body. (Which, in that case, it’s a good thing it’s coming out of my eyes and not somewhere else!) Anyway, looking out at all those [ ... ]

IQF Day 3

Ahhh! A day to “relax!” Today was my day to see the show…not that anyone could possibly see it in just one day! I spent the morning shopping. Here is the first interesting thing I bought. It’s the CD of the winning quilts. Look in the lower left hand corner! I also bought a copy of the International Quilt Festival magazine. Inside, I found this! I was specifically looking for any new products on the market. I will be writing three more articles for Quilting Arts Magazine, and I was hoping to find something really interesting and innovative. So far, I [ ... ]

IQF Day 2

Today’s first event was the IQA Luncheon. The top eight award winners had the dubious honor of sitting on the stage while we ate. Afterwards, we each had to get up and make a short speech. I never did hear how long it was supposed to be until we were being introduced. For those who have known me for any length of time, you’ll know that public speaking is not my favorite thing to do (somehow speaking at a quilt guild is different), but I didn’t think I was overly nervous until I stood at the podium. I [ ... ]

IQF Awards Ceremony

Today sweet hubby and I made our way to Houston, Texas today so we could attend the awards celebration for the International Quilt Festival. I’ve been waiting for tonight for several weeks, ever since I was told that “Windblown” won one of the top eight awards. So I put on the fanciest clothes I was willing to buy — no small thing for a jeans and t-shirt girl. (Thank you, DD#2!) It was so exciting as they announced the awards for the various categories. Oh my, these quilts are amazing! They announce the honorable mentions, third place, then second. When they announce [ ... ]

Glorious Gold wins second

I just picked up my quilt, “Glorious Gold,” from the lovely lady in my quilt guild who orgainzed the “glorious” quilt challenge. If you were reading my blog at the beginning of September, you may remember my adventure in paper piecing, bleeding fabrics, and fusible rhinestones. I was unable to be at the meeting where everyone displayed the quilts that were made for the challenge, so Sue took care of my quilt for me. My quilt won second place in the vote! As part of the prize package, I received a beautiful, handmade fabric wallet, a [ ... ]

Blown away!

I don’t know how to say this — I’m blown away!!! I just got a surprise phone call from Crystal at IQA. She told me the most amazing news! Windblown won one of the top eight awards for the upcoming International Quilt Festival in Houston! I wasn’t sure I heard her right, so I made her say it three times while I laughed nervously. Then I wrote it down so it would sink in… Wow! My stomach is still all fluttery. I have no more words! Thanks for letting [ ... ]
