Tutorial: Photographing quilts

I am not a professional photographer, but I am convinced that just about anyone can take decent pictures of their own quilts; certainly good enough for documenting your quilts. In most cases, you can take pictures good enough to enter quilt competitions. Personally, I’ve actually only hired a local professional photographer once, and I was disappointed with his results. That said, I have sent a couple of my quilts to quilt magazines for publication and their photographer did an absolutely fabulous job, one I would never be able to reproduce. So, there [ ... ]

Getting a quilt appraised

Today DH and I took a little road trip so we could get “Windblown” appraised. Many quilters I know have never had their quilts appraised, but after more than twelve years of maintaining the Lost Quilt Come Home website, I am fully convinced of the necessity of doing this, especially for any quilt that will be shipped. There are actually several kinds of appraisals. I typically get an appraisal to establish a replacement value for insurance reasons. You can also get a market value appraisal to help you decide what dollar amount [ ... ]

I lost 9″!

I lost 9″ today! Nine inches of magazines taking up shelf space. Okay, I admit that might not sound like much. But, that is 38 magazines that I paged through and got rid of. Some I gave to a family with three kids so they can cut them up. Some went into the trash. I have a stack of more magazines to go through in future nights while we watch TV. I’m glad I spent the time to flip through each magazine before I threw them away. See the tiny stack on the right? That’s what I’m keeping. I [ ... ]

Quiltmaker’s Documentation form revised

After valuable insights from some generous quilters (thanks Karen, Sandra, and Margaret!), I made some revisions to the Quiltmaker’s Documentation form. If you downloaded one yesterday, you might consider downloading the new form today. The file has the same name, so it should overwrite the previous one if you save them both in the same place. The new form includes space for sales information and appraisal information. I made some other additions and modifications, too. And then I entertained myself by playing around with some finicky details, which made me happy and hopefully made the form nicer to look [ ... ]

Tutorial: quilt documentation, continued

After posting yesterday about my rather haphazard way of “documenting” my quilts, I thought it might be nice to give you something a little more organized. So here is the second part of the tutorial on documenting your quilts. I spent a little time creating an easy-to-fill-out quilt documentation form in PDF format. I’m going to start printing one out for each quilt and then I’ll staple one to the inside front cover of each of my folders. I included a page for a photo of your quilt. I have tons of digital pictures on my computer, but [ ... ]

Tutorial: documenting your quilts

Seems like I’ve been spinning my wheels the last couple weeks. For the past five days I’ve been drowning in paperwork. Mostly end-of-the-year paperwork and tax stuff for my family, for our church, and for my quilting. Of course there were a few distracted side trips sprinkled in. One of my rabbit trails was organizing the drawer where I keep files on each of my quilts. (Wow — just about anything is better than taxes!) I began to realize how important it is to document quilts when one of my own quilts was lost during shipment. This led me to [ ... ]
