Silk painting with a resist

This weekend I started making DD#2s comfy pregnant belly blanket. I want to make this extra special, so I hand painted a piece of silk satin. I used Jacquard Clear Water Based Resist, which I transferred to a tiny bottle with an itty bitty metal tip, and hand lettered verses from Psalm 92. Then I added some swirls and rubber stamped some dots. After letting it dry overnight, I was ready to hand paint it. I wanted the fabric to stay as soft as possible, so instead of using fabric paint, I pulled out some green [ ... ]

Round two of snow dyeing

Here’s Round Two of my snow dyeing experiments. I’m glad I did it. I confirmed that I will probably never love dyeing. It’s a lot of work for something so unpredictable. I had one tub of fabrics that I poured brown over and then added additional colors on top of that. For some reason, none of the brown dye took at all. Maybe it was too old? The other colors worked, but not the brown and, since I wanted predominately brown, the end result was mostly white. Of course, theoretically I can set those fabrics aside [ ... ]

Snow dye results

I washed out my snow dye experiments from yesterday. I think I really like certain passages in some of them, but can’t say I’m overwhelmed with excitement. I know I am a novice at dyeing and I’m sure that greatly contributes. I had two larger pieces of fabric that I was hoping to dye a color wheel of sorts. That didn’t exactly happen. Also, on one I just laid the fabric in the bottom of the plastic bin, while on the second one I laid it on an elevated grid. I don’t know about you, but I think [ ... ]

Snow dyeing and gradations

I actually did something today! The snow was about 6″ deep, so I thought I should jump in with both feet and do some snow dyeing. Everybody else is doing it, right? I haven’t done any real dyeing since about 1998. (DD#2 and I did some simple dye jobs for her wedding, but that hardly counts. We used Rit dye to make her petticoat lavender and to make the groomsmen’s shirts butter yellow.)
