George’s permanent home

Earlier this month, we set up George in the folding table that came with it. To my surprise, somehow my measurements were off and the table was 3″ too long for the space that was available. Because of that, when the table was set up, it was nearly impossible to freely move around in my studio. That was okay, though. The plan all along was for George to eventually live in my 4 foot by 8 foot work table. Yesterday, sweet hubby decided he might as well prepare George’s permanent home sooner than later. We started by carefully studying the custom [ ... ]

Slow thaw

I’ve been going through a slow thaw. Sweet hubby and I traveled to visit my dad last week. We stayed with my brother and sister-in-law who live in California. They’ve been caring for Dad the last few years. My other brother who lives in Japan came, along with his wife and daughter, and my sister and her husband came from Oregon. It was nice having a mini family reunion for a few days. For some reason, it has been very difficult to recover from the three hour time change this trip. Both DH and I have been moving [ ... ]

George has arrived!

I am delighted to announce the arrival of George December 30, 2011 37 lbs. 29 by 18 inches 7:17 p.m. (Yes, I was in labor ALL day!) And, yes, it came with the red bow I love that it arrived in a box that says, “Caution – Extreme Excitement Bundled Inside* * Contents may cause excessive hugging, squealing, jumping, and fist-pumping!” (I also love the fact that this last sentence is written like it’s blowing in the wind because the machine was earned because Windblown won a big award at the IQA Houston show!)

I finally have a design wall!

I’ve always wanted a design wall, but we live in a fairly small house. I’m extremely blessed and thankful that I have a dedicated space for my stuido area, and I like that it is a part of the family room so I’m not isolated. But, I have too many things that I have to fit in my studio and there is no possible way to have a completely empty wall for a design wall. I told you earlier about my portable design wall, but there isn’t even room for that in my studio. Over the [ ... ]

I’ve been keeping secrets

I’ve been keeping secrets this week. On Monday, sweet hubby and I decided to add a member to our little family. George will be coming to live with us. He is expected to arrive sometime next week! (No, I didn’t have to wait nine months — it was more like nine years.) I had been wanting to get a sewing machine that was a little bigger so it would be easier to make large quilts. Beth Schillig was kind enough to show me her George when I was at her house last week, and she even [ ... ]

I can see my floor!

Yes! For weeks, I desperately needed to clean my studio, and now I can really see the floor! It was so horrifying, I couldn’t bring myself to take “before” pictures. Seriously. I haven’t been in there to work since September. Do you remember October and November? All the traveling? All the teaching? All the shopping? For two months I’ve been stacking stuff in there: on the floor, on the worktable, on the chair, hanging from the doors, leaning against every surface. My suitcase full of goodies from Houston still sat smack dab in the middle of my main work area. [ ... ]

Making use of available space

Three friends and I went on an Ikea adventure today. Our limitation was we had to be in and out in less than two hours. Not as easy as it sounds! I was looking for the Bygel containers to hook over the edge of the mini wall on my work table, but they were no where to be found. So on to the fun adventure of coming up with a different solution. I considered several different possibilities and finally decided on the Dokument pencil cups. Once I [ ... ]

Over the edge no more

I’m loving our new reclining loveseat. So comfy! But with every change for the better, new opportunities for problem-solving are born. The old couch was pushed right up against my work table and it had a high back that went above the table top for a couple inches. As a result, I could push things all the way to the couch without anything falling off. The new recliners have to be placed a few inches away from the table. In just the last few days, I can’t tell you how many things I’ve already pushed over the [ ... ]

Design walls

Would it surprise you to know that I don’t have an adequate design wall? I have one 4 ft by 8 ft piece of foam insulation board that I’ve covered with black fabric. It is great for taking photographs and lately I haven’t been making much that is bigger than that. It’s lightweight and I can drag it around the house or even outside if I want better lighting. But somehow I need to come up with something bigger and more permanent. I just don’t know where I would put it. My house isn’t that big and [ ... ]

Big rotary cutting mat

I earned some unexpected money (Thanks for the suggestion, Ed!) so I celebrated by finally buying myself a really big rotary cutting mat. It is 36″ by 60″ and it pretty much covers all of the usable area on my work table. Before, I had two 24″ by 36″ mats side by side and they were continually shifting and leaving a gap between them. One of them is nearly 20 years old and in very bad shape, so it definitely was time to replace them. I’m looking forward to using this new mat. Doesn’t it look nice [ ... ]
