Our empty nest began this year.

DD#2 won an athletic and achedemic scholarship to Notre Dame College in Cleveland, Ohio. She’s such a hard worker! I decided to make another ornament from the college bookstore, so I got a NDC keychain and ornament and combined it with a message in gold on the back.

DD#1 was becoming more involved in college life and she joined the http://www.sca.org/ group on campus. SCA stands for the Society of Creative Anachronism which basically means this is a group of people who love to play dress up (sound familiar?) and recreate the Middle Ages. I think the guys tolerate the dressing up because then it means they can play with swords. In any case, I ended up making her a linen kirtle and wool overdress with lacing on the sides. We completed the outfit with a full circle wool cloak. Her ornament for the year consists of a small metal box with a photo transfer of her costume. The frame on the front was created with a piece of handmade paper and a thin material similar to interfacing (I can’t remember what it’s called). The I used a wood burning tool to create the ragged edges and holes. A long strip of folded paper is inside the box so DD#1 could record her poems from that year.
