    Progress is being made

Yes, progress is being made on my improvisational Cherrywood Fabrics quilt. I was able to pin baste my quilt this weekend and I’ve already begun quilting it! I probably won’t get to work on it today, but hopefully I will tomorrow.

This weekend I got my August/September 2011 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine. Inside is my five-page article entitled “Color Confidence: Master Color Theory with an Easy Wall Hanging.” In it I explain basic color theory in easy to understand terms. My goal is for quilters to become more comfortable and confident in their color combinations.…

I’ve been fascinated with the color wheel for quite some time. Maybe it’s because it organizes the myriad of possibilities in a way that I can grasp. Anyway, I stumbled across Dick Nelson’s 3D color wheel which I thought did a good job of explaining tints, tones, and shades, along with how they relate to…

  • Color is a cameleon

    Color is a cameleon

I’ve had a long-standing love affair with color. One of the things I like to talk about when I do color lectures or color workshops is how color is a cameleon. It changes based on the things surrounding it. Robin Ferrier pointed me to two really cool illustrations of this. The first one to check…

    Tutorial: fused color wheel

I love color wheels. Maybe it’s because I love the bright, clear colors organized so they flow so nicely around and around. While I have numerous commercial color wheels (too many to admit to in polite company), I think you really start learning about color when you try to select the exact shades of fabric…

  • Sample color schemes

    Sample color schemes

Last night I finished quilting a little color scheme sample that I put together. It was fun working with such bright, pure colors. I love how they look on the crisp, white background! I made this sample so it is easy to remember various possible color schemes. I get in a rut quite easily, so…

Product review: Ruby Mountain Dye Works

I’ve been pretty quiet this week, mainly because I’ve actually been working in my studio 🙂 The week started with a workshop and lecture for Remembrance Quilt Guild in Springfield, Ohio. Really sweet ladies — thanks for your warm welcome! I had the opportunity to teach about color, and then I showed a PowerPoint presentation…

    Addicted to Things Organized Neatly

Several months ago I stumbled across a blog called Things Organized Neatly, and it immediately struck a chord with me. Today’s post showing a color wheel of crayons really made me smile, and I thought some of you would like it too. I only wish I had thought of it first! I confess that I…

    National Quilting Day 2011

Today was National Quilting Day and I actually got to quilt almost the whole day! No important quilts, but it was fun just the same. I love playing with fabric and feeling it under my hands. I decided to free-motion quilt the hot colors pyramid quilt top that I made last December. I used some…
