For this quilt I started with a photo cropped in close. I drew it full size on paper. Then I blocked in some major areas with commercially printed black-and-white fabrics that had different overall tonal values. I drew my image on top of that using fabric crayons and paintstiks. The image isn’t complete yet. There are still areas I want to tweak, but right now I’m trying to think through various ways I could quilt it.
New Project, New Portrait
Yesterday I started a new portrait. While the overall size of the quilt is small (only about 16 or 17″ square), the portrait itself is quite big since it fills the surface.

Maria this is wonderful! I can’t wait to try something like this.
Clever and interesting. I’m backtracking from you Blogger’s Quilt Festival entry because I find this very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
