Product Review: EcoluxLighting LED strip

I love my Janome 6500, but why don’t they put better lights on sewing machines? Maybe it’s just that my eyes are getting older, but I do like lots of light, especially when doing free motion quilting. Here’s what the sewing machine bed looks like with just the machine’s light on. Not much is actually illuminated.

For the past several years, I’ve positioned an Ott light in front to supplement the machine’s light. It does add more light, but it becomes an obstruction to my vision, and I have to move the light to reach the control panel. In addition, it casts a heavy shadow towards the back of the machine.

Last week I installed a 6 LED lighting strip by EcoluxLighting. I’m happy! As you can see in the next picture, it definitely makes my work area brighter, and there no more obstructions.

The light was super easy to install. I turned the light on and tried it in a couple different locations to decide where I liked it best, and then attached it in seconds with the double stick tape that was provided. It has an electric cord so I won’t have to worry about using up batteries. It was easy to run the cord along the back of my machine so it will never be in the way.

I think this light will be just what I need. I bought one for George, too, so he won’t feel left out.

You could do another article on different lights and their ease of use, installation, etc. Maybe that would prompt some companies to improve their machines.

    1. Great idea, Susan. Can it really be that hard to put a decent light on a sewing machine?

The light on my Bernina is pretty good. It’s shaped like a U so wraps in front and behind the foot, so less shadows. But extra light is always helpful! These look handy.
