International Quilt Festival in Cincinnati!

April 13, 14, and 15 will be very big days for quilters in Ohio and the surrounding regions. The International Quilt Festival will be in Cincinnati! I still don’t know if I’ll be able to make it. I’ll be taking my sweet husband to yet another specialist on Friday. They are still trying to determine why he had a stroke at just 53. Today, they did a transesophageal echocardiogram or TEE to take a closer look at his heart. Friday will be the third doctor’s visit this week alone, and [ ... ]

Spring 2012 Quilting Quarterly

The Spring 2012 issue of NQA’s Quilting Quarterly arrived in my mailbox last week. It spent several days sitting on my desk before I opened it. Emblazoned across the top of the page 9 says “Quilting with No Fear,” and below is a picture of me. Oh, dear! Me? No fear? I try to be brave. I try to approach my art without fear, but I definitely haven’t arrived! In fact, over the last several months, I feel like my feet have been captured in concrete and I can’t break free. I have an idea in my mind, but [ ... ]

IQA Journal Winter 2012

I just got my IQA (International Quilt Association) Digital Journal for Winter 2013. It has the award winning quilts from the 2011 IQA Judged Show in it. All I have to say is, seriously? When “Windblown” won the big award at the Houston quilt festival, they told me I would have to say a few words at the awards banquet. Not my favorite thing to do, and I didn’t do it well, either, but no one told me that they were going to print my acceptance “speech” (if [ ... ]

VidCast from 2011 IQF Houston

Bonnie McCaffery has done another fabulous job reporting on November’s 2011 International Quilt Festival in Houston. If you weren’t able to attend the show, here’s your chance to see more than 12 minutes of video. In it are some of the most amazing quilts, along with short interviews with some of the quilters. Bonnie interviewed me (!) and that clip is at about 7 minutes into the video. Be patient; it may take a while to download since the video is so long. Hope you enjoy it!

Beavercreek News-Current

The Beavercreek News-Current, a small local newspaper in our town, did a nice article on “Windblown” winning the award at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. (Thanks, Jodi!) I knew they were writing an article, but didn’t know when it was going to be published until a friend at church said one of her relatives saw it. Isn’t it fun how the grapevine works? You can see the full article on line at xeniagazette.com.

Windblown on The Quilt Show

Sharon Pederson of The Quilt Show interviewed me about Windblown while I was at the International Quilt Festifal in Houston. The interview is now on her Daily Blog. If the link above doesn’t work, you can visit the website at http://www.thequiltshow.com/os/blog.php/blog_id/4378.

IQF Master Awards

These are the five Master Award winners from the 2011 International Quilt Festival in Houston. Each of the Master Awards include a $5,000 prize. Click on a photo to see a larger version. Susan Stewart won the Pfaff Master Award for Machine Artistry for her quilt, “Radiance.” It features digitized machine embroidery and also digitized free standing lace insets along the border. She did free motion machine quilting and achieved some beautiful trapunto effects. This view of the back gives you a better idea of her quilting and the lace insets. Sharon Schamber won the Maywood [ ... ]

What was I going to say?

Someone asked me what I was going to say at the IQA Luncheon last Wednesday, if I didn’t have a melt down like I did. Yes, I really did have something in mind, but I accidentally left my brain behind when I walked to the podium. Plus, my eyes have a habit of leaking when I’m feeling stress. I guess all that pressure just squeezes the water right out of my body. (Which, in that case, it’s a good thing it’s coming out of my eyes and not somewhere else!) Anyway, looking out at all those [ ... ]

IQF Day 4

I’m definitely feeling my age now. I remember coming to Quilt Festival ten years ago or so, and staying the entire day from the moment it opened to the moment it closed. Today, I wore myself out around 4, so I hopped on the shuttle bus and headed back to the hotel. I told sweet hubby I wasn’t ruling out the possibility of going back to the show since it’s open until 7, but the longer I sit still, the less likely that is! This is a tiny view of one special exhibit at the show. I forget how big [ ... ]

IQF Day 3

Ahhh! A day to “relax!” Today was my day to see the show…not that anyone could possibly see it in just one day! I spent the morning shopping. Here is the first interesting thing I bought. It’s the CD of the winning quilts. Look in the lower left hand corner! I also bought a copy of the International Quilt Festival magazine. Inside, I found this! I was specifically looking for any new products on the market. I will be writing three more articles for Quilting Arts Magazine, and I was hoping to find something really interesting and innovative. So far, I [ ... ]
